Bandhani (Bandhej), an ornament of Rajasthan culture enjoys the place of pride in the kingdom of handicrafts. It is one of the finest arts of Rajasthan heritage, which is thriving day by day. Bandhani (Bandhej) originated from Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is a composite and classy method of decoration by linking various colours. Bandhani work is done on cotton and silk material. The material tied in a composite manner with the assistance of nails and grains, to come up with charming prints. The most eye-catching Bandhej sarees have a variety of colour combinations. Cotton and Silk Bandhani sarees look fabulous when the border is done up with applique zari work. Jodhpuri Bandhani sarees comes in vide verities of pure georgette, chiffon and crepe sarees with traditional works like embroidery, gottapatti and sequins.


Bandhani requires a very high skill of working which involves 5 steps in making:

  • First, the particular area of material dyed then it outlined with elusive colours, a thin transparent sheet of plastic placed which have pined holes over the dyed area. In addition, the desired pattern imprinted on the material.
  • Then knotstied on material with nylon thread on the imprinted pattern.
  • Material washed to remove imprinted colour. Then it dipped in Naphthol for few minutes then dyed in either yellow or light colour.
  • The material rinsed, squeezed and dried before dying it again in a dark colour.
  • After lasting dying material washed and stretched. The result is an elegant pattern with beautiful colours.
